Coronavirus lockdown: Ramayan re-telecast on DD creates a record

In the wake of the nationwide coronavirus lockdown till April 14, to deal Doordarshan decided to re-telecast the 1980s popular serials Ramayan and Mahabharat. Days ahead of Ram Navami (birth anniversary of Lord Rama), the re-telecast of Ramayan appears to have yielded productive outputs for Doordarshan with the numbers signifying a rise in viewership of the show.

The re-telecast of Ramanand Sagar’s epic tale reaped the highest-ever rating for a Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC) programme since 2015 when the Broadcasting Audience Research Council (BARC) started calculating the television audience.

According to the BARC data, the opening show of Ramayan on last Saturday morning had 34 million viewers and enjoyed a rating of 3.4 per cent, while on the same evening, 45 million viewers watched it, a rise by 5.2 per cent. The show improved its performance on Sunday, with 40 million and 51 million people watching it in the morning and evening respectively. Ramayan garnered 170 million viewers in four shows over the last weekend.

Shashi Shekhar, CEO of Prasar Bharati, on his Twitter account, wrote, "Thrilled to share that the re-telecast of RAMAYAN on @ddnational has garnered the highest ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015 (source: @BARCIndia). This is a record of sorts for Doordarshan since BARC started TV Audience Measurement in 2015 underscoring how India is watching DD even as India fights back #CORONA #StayHomeToStaySafe."

Ramayan is telecast twice a day at 9 am and 9 pm on DD National every day.
