Community building at its best

Community building at its best

Aren’t fluids just the best? They take shape of anything they are poured into and adjust quickly to their surroundings. Fluid, which was started by Krishan Jagota, an illusionist, magician and a full-time employee in a design agency, is a melting pot of like-minded musicians, poets, brand marketers, entertainment entrepreneurs, architects, and people from various walks of life who imbibe different skills from each other. They are erasing the lines between different creative professions and revelling in the joy of discovering multiple talents within themselves. Jagota performed a list of magic illusions at the Pune Design Festival recently.

Talking about the inception of Fluid, Jagota says, “While I was in Berlin, I was exposed to a lot of experiences in terms of art, music, graffiti, and experiments in the visual arts. It all developed in my mind for a few years.”

But it was in the last three years that he conceptualised Fluid to bring the art community together and started organising small events at his house.

What is fluid
So why ‘Fluid’? “I think fluid is the origin of everything, Fluid is the state from which we all start, we are always forming and reaching somewhere. But, when we define ourselves and think that we have reached our destination, it’s when we stop growing,” points out Jagota. He further adds that fluid is an ongoing process and there is so much to explore in life across the various dimensions of human existence.

“We need to get over the limitations like ‘age’ which is just a number, or why people think that they have two left feet, and can’t dance. So fluid is your own space where you come out of your limitations, relax and explore your creativity,” he says.

A fluid community
When it comes to any community, people should be able to inspire, learn and teach each other, feels Jagota. “Even when it comes to Fluid, we are a community that is open to people who are inspiring enough to share what they have and are also inspired and fluid to learn,” he explains.

A community is all about bringing together people of similar mindsets, who are open to learn and educate. “A community without labels helps you explore more things in life. So break free from these labels and seek something new and constructive everywhere you go,” he says because he believes that learning is an ongoing process.

He points out that there is a lot of untapped talent in India, but sadly, the creative people are being put in a box. “There are certain things that people say to artistes like, ‘Oh, you paint beautifully. I can’t even draw a straight line,’ or, ‘You dance so well. I have two left feet,’or ‘You have an amazing voice. I wish I could sing like that.’ But these are all excuses. How can we give ourselves these labels without even trying other things?” questions Jagota.

He feels it is essential that we move out of this box business and take up more creative forms to not only understand the principles of them but to also apply them in day-to-day lives.

Millennials and Design
“Millennials are people of a different mindset altogether, but the way they are perceived often puts them in a bad light. However, they are more than that,” says Jagota. The founder has often seen millennials as beings who mind their own business but they do speak up when it comes to community cause. “They have vivid ideas and thinking  processes which often fall in the creativity category. So if they don’t like what you are suggesting, they will tell you so in a rather creative manner,” Jagota points out.

He adds that millennials don’t look at art as a medium to impress others, rather it is their way to let people take something back with them.

“I believe that they find inspiration in every piece of art that they come across and the way they process is very subjective, which gives them a new perspective in problem solving which we should learn from them,” he concludes.
