The Choice Is Theirs

The Choice Is Theirs

Is Eid complete without a Salman Khan movie? Just like every year, the Bollywood superstar released his new film Bharat this Eid too. The trailer was exciting, the songs were a hit too and  Salman and Katrina always make a great pair on screen.

But what was unexpected was the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix on the same day. The film, directed by Simon Kinberg, is the sequel to the 2016 X-Men Apocalypse, and has a huge fan following, especially among youngsters. The movie also stars Sophie Turner, known for her role as Sansa Stark or The Queen in the North in the Game of Thrones, who has her own set of ardent fans.

So for young movie goers, Dark Phoenix was the obvious choice this week. They tell us what draws them to the superhero franchise films:

“Watching movies is a part of summer fun, however, this time round we had two big releases in the theatres that haven’t garnered any critical acclaim but still if you had to make a choice, I suggest you go for Dark Phoenix, and I have some valid arguments for that. First, Dark Phoenix is part of a much larger narrative and has the legacy of the successful X-Men franchise that belongs to the Marvel Comic Universe which itself is big reason for comic book fans to know where the saga takes them next and what’s in store for the franchise. Rest assured it will guarantee you action-packed entertainment. Another reason why you should consider skipping Bharat is to let Bollywood realise that we won’t accept mediocrity in the name of masala entertainment any more. Since last year we have had several movies with good scripts and performances and it’s high time Bollywood realised that good content will be appreciated more than the same old style of cinema that they continue to produce in the name of art. Times have changed and so has the audience, we won’t accept anything that’s illogical, to say the least.”

“Out of so many reasons, the best one is that it’s a Marvel movie. MCU, who has created history with  Avengers: Endgame, is known for taking the game a step ahead with every sequel. It seems to be enhancing everything, from story to cinematography. They know how to keep their audience engaged. Bharat had an exciting trailer but I’m afraid, it’s still going to turn out to be the same clichéd Bollywood Salman Khan film. Also, Bharat is a remake; I would anytime watch an original. Despite Wolverine’s absence I m eager to see the future of Jean Grey and her powers that have been unlocked in the X-Men: Apocalypse. It’s going to be exciting.”

“Well if it’s MCU vs Salman Khan Films, I would surely lean towards MCU because compared to Salman Khan’s movies Marvel is better at everything — action, visuals, and, most importantly, storyline and script. If we see Salman’s last two or three movies, they had nothing new to share. No need to talk about Race 3 right... but on the other hand, Marvel’s last movie Endgame was a gem. Besides that as millennials it is X-Men we have spent our childhood watching so it has a much greater appeal.”

“There are plenty of reasons I would choose Dark Phoenix over Bharat.  First of all, I am a huge Marvel fan and have been following X Men series from a long time. Also, I didn’t find the trailer of Bharat appealing, and I would not spend my money just because it casts Salman in the lead. Now after the movie has hit theatres and ratings and reviews have come in, we know what it lacks. So, I am all the more determined not to watch it. When I know what I enjoy why would I watch something that doesn’t interest  me?”
— Ankit Kumar Swashi, Journalism, MIT, LONI

“I would prefer watching X-Men: Dark Phoenix because X-Men franchise movies are always a delight to watch. Dark Phoenix is a sci-fi movie so the graphics and other VFX make it a treat to watch, while Bharat has some scenes that totally opposes the laws of physics which is kind of a big no-no for new-age Bollywood movies. I personally prefer a good story with some good action and good acting which I feel Bharat lacks.”
