Bharti Singh’s big, fat wedding

Bharti Singh’s big, fat wedding

Bharti Singh, over the years, has only made us laugh. But the actress and stand-up comedian herself is currently going through mixed emotions — because of her impending nuptials. When we caught up with Bharti, she sounded excited, tired and emotional too. “I haven’t slept for 10 days. Right now, I just want to sleep. But there’re so many last minute things that need to be done. Guests have started arriving; kids are running around. My mother is shouting and so is everyone else. But I am also having fun,” she says.

Bharti is getting married to her longtime boyfriend Harsh Limbachiyaa on December 1 in Goa. She says that Harsh was never in favour of a big fat wedding but she was. “Harsh wanted us to go shopping, have a simple registered marriage, followed by a reception. But I wanted haldi, mehendi, sangeet and then a big wedding. You get married only once, so I wanted to do it the way it’s done,” she says, adding, “I have performed at so many weddings, so I wanted my friends to perform at my nuptials. I want to sit and enjoy. Imagine an expensive anchor Maniesh Paul performing at my wedding (laughs). ”

The stand-up comedian, who is currently not taking up shows and is only concentrating on events, says that she is enjoying all the attention. “For the past few days, whenever my mom comes to wake me up, she does it with much love. She keeps playing with my hair and kisses my forehead. She says, ‘Kuch hi din bachhe hai bas. Fir tu chali jayegi’. I pretend that I am sleeping, but actually I listen to all the emotional talk she is having with me,” says she.

Bharti then goes on to question the traditions that the bride has to leave her parental home to stay with her husband/in-laws. “I know I am not the first person, who would be leaving her home to shift to her husband’s house. But this is not right. I have lived with my family for 30 years and one day I just have to leave them. I am trying to control my emotions because I don’t want my mother to cry. She keeps breaking down every now and then,” opines Bharti.

She adds, “It’s my family which is making things special for me. Everyone in my family, those who suffer from knee ache or those who haven’t danced ever, are dancing at my sangeet. There are relatives who are rehearsing their steps in Delhi, some in Punjab. They are sharing their rehearsal videos. I am going to remember their efforts for the rest of my life.”

The pictures of Bharti’s wedding trousseau have gone viral and are being liked by all. Though well-known designers had approached her to design the outfit, Bharti went ahead with Akashi Design Studio’s Adhya. “They have designed all my outfits that I have worn at events and shows. In fact, they have completely changed my look over the years. How could I ask someone else to design my wedding lehenga now? I believe in maintaining relationships. I completely trust them,” Bharti says, adding that ace designer Neeta Lulla has designed her reception outfit.

The wedding lehenga is quite special, with images of brides all over it. “Their team has downloaded images of different types of brides and we decided on which image we wanted. It’s a beautiful concept,” says she.

The entire wedding — right from shopping till the rituals, will be turned into a six-part web series, and it will go online from this month-end. She says, “Unlike other celebrities who are so secretive about their wedding, I am not. Why should I be? This is such a beautiful moment. My fans are my family and they are curious to know about my nuptials. I have always made my fans laugh, then why should I disappoint them?,” she questions before signing off.
