‘Red Notice’ to stream on Netflix

‘Red Notice’ to stream on Netflix

Netflix is no stranger to buying movies originally destined for other studios, but its latest coup is particularly eyebrow-raising.

The company has acquired Red Notice, a blockbuster heist thriller that was previously under Universal’s wing. It was already set to be a high-profile film with Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot as its biggest stars, but the switch to Netflix also brings Ryan Reynolds to the cast.

The film will be directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who is best known for working with Dwayne on Central Intelligence and Skyscraper.

There’s no release window at this early stage, although shooting for the movie starts in 2020.

This is both a sly ploy and one of Netflix’s biggest moves in recent memory. The combo of ‘The Rock’, Gal  and Ryan in a globe-trotting action caper is exactly the kind of thing that may well rack up a billion views in the first 72 hours.

Having a huge movie like Red Notice is a big deal for Netflix. It’s about racking up subscriptions as opposed to justifying, on a film by film basis, the production and marketing costs related to box office or tickets sold.

The big question is: A would-be theatrical event movie like Red Notice going straight-to-streaming a sign of Hollywood’s dwindling faith in moviegoers to show up for what they claim to want to see? Or is this a sign that Netflix is slowly becoming just another studio?
