‘I love composing love songs’

For composer-singer Vishal Mishra, 2019 has been quite exciting and fulfilling. In times, when multiple composers have been contributing to a film’s music, the young musician composed the entire album of Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Bahl’s debut film Notebook. Its music also got a thumbs up from the listeners.

“Having ownership of what you are trying to do is the biggest thing a creative soul can ask for,” said Vishal when we caught up with him at a city hotel, last week. “I gave nine months of my heart and soul to the album and people reacted to it in a positive manner. I can’t be happier,” he added.

The composer, who is working on other solo projects like Saand Ki Aankh, Anurag Kashyap’s next production, further mentioned, “The loss and profit of the project also lies entirely on your shoulders, which is kind of great.”

He has now composed two tracks for Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani-starrer Kabir Singh. While Kaise Hua, which released on June 13, has crossed 7.2 lakh views on YouTube, Pehla Pyaar has become a popular track. Vishal, who was in the city for the promotion of the film’s music, said, “I was told by the makers that Kabir Singh is a very vulnerable story about first love. The music had to be raw yet it had to have a feel. I also wanted to work on it because it’s been long since I have been on a nostalgic trip. I got an opportunity to feel how I used to feel years ago.”

He is very happy about the songs being received so well. “An artist is always seeking affirmation and if the listeners react to it, there is nothing more blissful,” he added. Kaise Hua is about a boy falling in love and Vishal composed the music in just a few minutes. “I got Manoj Muntashir to write the lyrics. Pehla Pehla Pyar is about long distance relationship and this is the first time, I have composed for a situation like this. I feel for people who are in love, even though they are not living together. It’s such a beautiful yet painful feeling,” he said, adding, “I love making love songs and my love songs have a tinge of sadness to them. I think that is the biggest connect. In this film, I got to explore it as much as I could,” he said.

He has treated the Hindi film (Kabir Singh is the official remake of Arjun Reddy) as a standalone. “The music is completely new. But I had to keep its soul in mind,” he said, adding that creating music is easy and difficult at the same time. “You are making something that is non existential; you are trying to create something out of nothingness. It’s a divine process, which is not in your control. Fortunately, what makes it easy is that you are inspired by your director and script,” he added.

The singer-composer says that his songs are inspired by his life in some way or the other. “Every song has a sense of my individuality. If I am not doing that, then I shouldn’t be composing music,” Vishal said, adding that the reason makers call him to compose tracks is because his music adds that extra element to the film. “I want people to feel my songs,” said Vishal who has composed songs for Tutak Tutak Tutiya, Munna Michael, Qarib Qarib Singlle, Veere Di Wedding and Race 3.

The job of creating popular soulful numbers can be difficult? However, Vishal says, “Our job is to make songs. If they are expecting too much from you, then there is nothing wrong. I really want people to put their expectations on me so that I can deliver.”

Currently, the composer is working on two big projects which include Jabariya Jodi and Khandaani Shafakhana.
