‘I am hoping people will like us too’

Yeh Hai Mohabbatein was one of the most successful shows on Indian television and so was its hit pair -- Ishita and Raman Bhalla (played by Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel) but the show has come to an end. Replacing it is it’s spinoff — Yeh Hai Chahatein, which is going on air today (December 19).

Yeh Hai Chahatein stars Sargun Kaur Luthra and Abrar Qazi in the title roles. Sargun says that she had watched Yeh Hai Mohabbatein when she was in Delhi and has liked the character of Ishita.

The actress is playing a gynaecologist and single mother in the show and she says it’s not easy to play a mother on screen. “I am not very old or mature to play a mother but when the show was offered to me, I found it very challenging.” But were there any apprehensions in her mind about whether she will be able to pull off a character like this and she says, “I never had any problem portraying an onscreen mother. Having said that, it’s not easy being a single mother because she has to be strong headed and mature enough to handle the responsibility of a child. She also has to deal with the society as it might judge her. How she handles all of this has to reflect on my face. To understand all those nuances, I had attended a workshop and observed people around me. I am trying my best to play the character.”

Sargun met  Vidhaan Sharma, who plays her adopted son in the show, during the mock shoot. They connected instantly. “We are like friends. We like each other a lot, which will be visible on the screen.”

She adds s that the two shows are different from each other as the message they are giving out is different. “In Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Raman was playing a single father. But our show is from the perspective of a woman. What happens when a single mother decides to settle down? Will the society will be equally forthcoming of the idea? In our country, we accept a man getting into such a relation.”

There is no denying that Yeh Hai...was hugely loved by the audience. Living up to its popularity is going to a big task. “There is little bit of pressure because the audience had loved the bonding between Ishita and Raman. The audience will definitely search for the same bonding between  Abrar and I. I think, it’s more of a responsibility on our part and I am hoping people will like us too. I am really excited,” she says.

The actress can’t stop gushing about her producer Ekta Kapoor and says she is in awe of her. “Ekta is such a strong personality,” says the actress who was last seen in Tantra.

After working in a series of supernatural shows, Yeh Hai Chahatein is her first social drama and the actress says it’s a nice break for her.
