‘I’m a bit of a perfectionist’

Last year, when the song Bom Diggy Diggy (from Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety) released, it became a huge hit. British-Indian singer Jasmin Walia, who sang the song along with Zack Knight, became an overnight sensation.

Recently, she launched her next single Mañana — a fun, pop, ‘partyish’ style number. The song has received over a million views on YouTube and Jasmin says that she is really happy to see her fans’ reaction and their love for the song.

“It is a song, I created with a hint of Spanish vibes as I like to change it up with every song. So, I wanted to make some international and Indian beats and fuse them. I like to try new things with each song,” says the multi-talented artist.

But Jasmin isn’t just a pretty face. The TV personality, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur, was first noticed after participating in British reality television show — The Only Way is Essex. Later, she went on to appear on several TV shows like Desi Rascals and Dinner Date.

She has worked on several singles including Dum Dee Dee Dum, Girls Like Me, Temple, Go Down and Bom Diggy (from which the Hindi song was recreated) and has several interesting projects lined up.

While sharing more about her passion, Jasmin gives us a peek into her projects.

- From singing to conceptualising to creating Mañana, you have single-handedly worked on the song. Can you take us through the process, and how challenging was it working on the song all by yourself?
A lot is involved in all that, from the styling to the editing etc. I like to always take on new challenges and push myself. But really the truth is, I oversee everything because I am a bit of a perfectionist. I overwork but it is always worth it when I see the finished product. It was fun and I am so excited to see so much love for it.

- How has your work on independent music or singles helped you grow as a singer?
With independent music, an artist has freedom of expression and can totally bring out what they feel in their songs. Be it any kind of music, any form of practice will always make us grow and it pushes one to go to another level. It has definitely helped and I have learnt so much along the way.

- Your fans include listeners across the world. While working on each track, do you keep your global fan base in mind?
Yes indeed, Mañana is for a global audience. Like I mentioned we have kept the vibe very international with hints of Indian melodies. So yes, it is always a fusion that is appealing to all.

- You have been singing since an early age. Is music your first love?
I have been a performer for as early as I can remember. Yes, I love singing and music has always been my first love. I love making music, dancing to music, singing to it. Everything revolves around music pretty much.

- Any projects in Bollywood?
Potentially yes. If any opportunity comes my way, most definitely would like to explore it. We are working on more new and interesting music and should soon talk about it as things materialise.

- You are also into fashion, make-up line, TV. How do you manage time?
You always seem to manage time for things you love, and it is not that bad actually. Pop by Jasmin is a make-up brand. The line has sold out. But my latest venture is Kissmwah.com — fashion accessories which is going great.
