‘Exercising gives me immense satisfaction and happiness’

At 6 am, when most people are asleep, Veena Sagar prepares breakfast and lunch for her son and husband. She makes sure that her husband and son eat healthy so they take their respective lunch boxes to work and school. Her evenings are dedicated to her son’s studies. She also looks after the accounts of her husband’s business. Despite all the work and house chores, she never misses her workout. “Paucity of time is never an excuse to not hit the gym. You need to make time for yourself and your well-being,” says Sagar, who feels that staying fit makes one confident about themselves.

Often, women tend to overlook their own health and fitness post marriage or motherhood. However, Sagar, mother of a 13-year-old, has been working out six days a week for the past 10 years. Says she, “I have been suffering from hypothyroidism since the age of 13, which is one of the reasons for weight gain, however, because of my dedication and hard work and positivity towards fitness, I have been able to keep my weight in check and stay in good shape.”

Fitness is also good for one’s mental well being and Sagar totally believes in this philosophy. The 35-year-old Thane resident says, “Fitness brings about an overall transformation, both physically and mentally, and it can be achieved by eating healthy and leading an active life. I’m a regular at the gym, and come what may, I do not skip my workout because it isn’t just a way to stay in shape and lose weight, but exercising gives me immense satisfaction and happiness,” says she.

Her workouts are a good mix of cardio like spinning, kettlebell, elliptical, treadmill, rowing, and weight training. “My weight training routine involves exercises for the lower body, upper body, back and abs. Flat, inclined and declined bench press, overhead press, lateral pulldown, cable pushdown are some of the workouts I do for my upper body. For lower body, I practise lunges, deadlifts, leg curls etc,” says Sagar, adding “If you are fit, you can focus on your work and even overcome day-to-day challenges. A 30-minute workout a day can reduce stress and anxiety and calm you down, besides providing energy and stamina to pull through the day.”

As much as she is dedicated to gymming, she is equally disciplined about her nutrition. She is a big advocate of simple ghar ka khana and tries to avoid eating outside as much as possible. “I prefer eating simple and clean food and I ensure that I am well hydrated and get enough sleep because fitness is a combination of good workout, good nutrition and proper rest. I eat two eggs sans yolk for breakfast at 7.30 am. For lunch, I take moong sprouts, dal, vegetables, chapati and salad. My tea, which I sip on late afternoon, is without sugar, however, if I feel hungry mid afternoon, I take buttermilk and eggs without the yolk. I like to munch on some makhanas as evening snack and my dinner is usually the same as lunch,” says Sagar.
