New Delhi: India’s Asian Games and World Cup hero Ajay Thakur has finally woken up to the task of winning full points for his team Tamil Thalaivas as on Sunday he plotted yet another remarkable chase to beat Gujarat Supergiants 35-34 in the Inter-Zone Challenge match of the Pro Kabaddi League Season 5 at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex here on Tuesday.
It may be a tad late in the season for Tamil Thalaivas to make a rally, but Ajay Thakur had plans that worked well nonetheless. For whole of the match, it was Zone ‘A’ No 2 side Gujarat that led. With little over eight minutes remaining, Gujarat had 10 point lead and they looked seemingly impregnable given the way their raider Sachin (11) was scoring points.
But Thakur had other ideas. Especially since the next leg is slated at home in Chennai and they have six straight matches from Friday to Thursday.
“I knew there was a chance if I could carry on with my raids. Youngsters are overactive and that’s when I decided to go for Sachin’s ankle and cought him,” explained Thakur of the crucial tackle that opened him the chance to go for the final raid, which prove the winning move.
It was Sachin, Chandran Ranjit (5) and Fazel Atrachali (5) who did the bulk of scoring for Gujarat, but Thakur masterminded the chase that even his team didn’t believe could happen.
“They were under pressure since we had 10 point lead, but the way Ajay planned the raids it goes on to prove that in kabaddi no lead is safe,” said Gujarat coach Manpreet Singh.
