Pune: City-based Tara Shah did herself proud bagging the Under-15 girls singles title in the All India Sub Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2018 at the Gopichand Academy courts, Hyderabad on Monday.
Seeded No. 3 in the event, the Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy (NKBA) trainee staged a comeback fighting off the stiff challenge of No. 4 seed Vijetha Harish (Karnataka) 16-21, 24-22, 21-19 in a 52-minute encounter.
Tara’s win in the final turned out to be the only title any Pune player won at Hyderabad. It was also her second U15 title of the year after claiming the title at Gulbaga, Karnataka in January.
En route the final Tara downed seeded players in No 10 seed Taneesha Singh (Uttar Pradesh) and No. 6 Anupama Upadhyaya (Haryana) in straight sets, but not before surviving a three-game fight against wild card Anagha Pai (Telangana) 21-15, 18-21, 21-10.
Final: bt 4-Vijetha Harish (Kar) 16-21, 24-22, 21-19.
Semifinal: bt 10-Taneesha Singh (UP) 21-11, 21-14.
Quarterfinal: bt 6-Anupama Upadhyaya (Har) 21-18, 21-16.
Round 3: bt WC-Anagha Pai (Tel) 21-15, 18-21, 21-10.
