Punjab shocked by Tamil Nadu

Champions Punjab suffered a shock defeat to Tamil Nadu, last year’s runners up Haryana pummelled Manipur 7-0, while host’s Maharashtra lost to Uttar Pradesh 7-1 on the opening day of the 9th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2019 (Div ‘A’) at the Sports Authority of India, Western Training Centre, here on Sunday.

Pune: Champions Punjab suffered a shock defeat to Tamil Nadu, last year’s runners up Haryana pummelled Manipur 7-0, while host’s Maharashtra lost to Uttar Pradesh 7-1 on the opening day of the 9th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2019 (Div ‘A’) at the Sports Authority of India, Western Training Centre, here on Sunday.

In the opening game of the tournament, Tamil Nadu rode on the four-goal effort by S Karthi (6th, 10th, 35th, 50th), including a penalty-corner conversion and get off to a dream start.

Dominating the first quarter, Tamil Nadu led 2-0 against four-time winners Punjab in a Pool-A fixture.

Punjab struck back in the second quarter when Karajwinder Singh (17th), Parteek Sharma (19th) successfully converted penalty-corners and later Sudarshan Singh (22nd) added another to lead 3-2. In the third quarter, Tamil Nadu made it 3-3 through Karthi (35th).

In the fourth quarter, Karthi (50th) made it 4-3 for Tamil Nadu, while Parteek Sharma (51st) made it 4-4. Into the last ten minutes and Tamil Nadu had K Tiras (51st) settle the issue in Tamil Nadu’s favour and complete a shock win.  
  
Chandigarh win 11-goal game
In the same pool, Chandigarh downed Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) 7-4. A triple strike by Sahibjeet Singh (8th, 48th, 60th), a brace by Maninder Singh (45th, 47th) and a goal each by Hashim (2nd) and Harpreet Singh (9th) accounted for the tally. SSCB had Jorson Mairembam (30th, 40th) and a goal each by DU Mokshit (50th) and Manip Kerketta (24th) reduce the margin for SSCB.  

Jharkhand, Haryana lead
In a hard-fought, Pool-B encounter, Jharkhand struck late through Deepak Soreng (45th) to down Madhya Pradesh 1-0.

In another Pool-B encounter, runners-up Haryana had Dhami Boby Singh’s brace led the way against Manipur. Haryana took the lead early by Parmeet (3rd) and Dhami (3rd) and led 2-0. Pawan (15th), Ankush (36th), Rimanshu (44th), Dhami (45th) and Pankaj (59th) completed the 7-0 scoreline.  

Maharashtra outclassed
Host’s Maharashtra disappointed in front of their home crowd. In the first ever meeting between both teams, Uttar Pradesh were led by a five-goal feat by Gopikumar Sonkar (3rd, 4th, 34th, 45th, 52nd) that left Maharashtra at the bottom of Pool-C after Day 1.

The hosts conceded early in the first quarter but managed to stay in the race when local boy Amid Khan (28th) scored.
 
Thereafter Uttar Pradesh proved too tough and completed their scoreline via a brace from Ajay Yadav who scored in the 33rd and 44th minutes.

Last year’s semi-finalists, Gangpur-Odisha staged a comeback against Delhi and drew 3-3 in Pool C. Puran Kerketta (18th) gave Gangpur-Odisha the lead and added goals via Sibren Lakra (37th) and Sudeep Chirmako (43rd). 

Delhi struck back through Amit (19th), Chetan Sharma (34th) and Sahil Kumar (36th) to share points.
SPSB holds Odisha
In the lone Pool-D encounter of the day, Odisha and Steel Plant Sports Board (SPSB) played out a 1-1 draw. 
After a goalless first-half, Subas Barla (42nd) helped the Odisha outfit take the lead netting off a penalty corner. Meanwhile SPSB had Kingston Thokchom levelling scores in the 57th minute of the game.
