Punjab captures Senior National hockey title

Pune: Scoring two goals in the last seven minutes helped Punjab to defeat Petroleum Sports Promotion Board 2-1 in the final of the  8th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship, A Division at the Padma Shri Mohammad Shahid Synthetic Hockey Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday.

Petroleum Sports Promotion Board took an early lead with Gurjinder Singh converted a penalty corner in the third minute to start things on bright note.

Pune: Scoring two goals in the last seven minutes helped Punjab to defeat Petroleum Sports Promotion Board 2-1 in the final of the  8th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship, A Division at the Padma Shri Mohammad Shahid Synthetic Hockey Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday.

Petroleum Sports Promotion Board took an early lead with Gurjinder Singh converted a penalty corner in the third minute to start things on bright note.

Petroleum boys controlled the game thereafter until Sarvanjit Singh scored an equaliser in 53rd minute for Punjab. Seven minutes later, Sarvanjit netted one more as Punjab emerge victorious.

Punjab had won bronze medal in last year’s tournament. In the battle of third place, defending champions Railway Sports Promotion Board ousted Air India Sports Promotion Board 5-3 in penalty shoot out to settle for bronze.

Both the teams scored one goal each at the end of regulation time. Railways took an early lead with Sayyad Niyaz Rahim scoring a field goal in fifth minute. In the 17th minute, Shivender Singh equalised for Air India.

Final: Punjab 2 (Sarvanjit Singh 53rd, 60th) beat Petroleum Sports Promotion Board 1 (Gurjinder Singh 3rd.)
