Pune City Police, PCMC and SRPF score contrasting wins

PUNE: Pune City Police, the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and the team of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) scored contrasting wins in the Men’s Open section in the 114th Aga Khan Cup all-India Hockey Tournament at the Major Dhyan Chand Poligras Stadium in Nehrunagar, Pimpri, on Monday.

The PCMC Team rode on to three goals from Ajay Gote, two coming in the first half and one in the second, and braces from Naresh Charole and Abhishek Mane to blank Devrukh Ratnagiri 7-0, in the men’s section.

SRPF too scored one-sided 3-0 win over Jalgaon Hockey Association, but Pune City Police was taken to the distance by Rakshak, before the police team prevailed 4-2.

For PCMC, it was Ajay Gote who opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of the match and he scored the second goal too to make it 2-0 in the 18th minute, before Charole and Mane took over the goal-scoring chances.

Charole struck in the 27th minute to make it 3-0 before Mane’s first goal gave PCMC 4-0 lead in the 31st minute. Charole and Mane found the target second apart in the 32nd minute before Gote rounded off the tally in the 38th minute.

SRPF needed one goal each from Deepak Matai (20th), Mosin Pathan (22nd) and Rahul Mehakare (31st) to beat Jalgaon Hockey Association 3-0.

Then Pune City Police rallied from a goal down to beat Rakshak 4-2. Rakshak took the lead on the opening goal from Sandeep Ahiwale in the 17th minute before Jagdish Kishore found the equalizer in the 26th minute.

Rama Bavanahkar made it 2-1 in the 28th minute before Gaurav Kamble (30th) added more cushion to the lead (3-1).

Ahiwale found his brace in the 35th minute to add spice to the contest (3-2) before Kamble (38th) saved Pune Police from blushes.

In other matches, Green Meadows defeated Kids XI 5-0 thanks to goals from Bhagwan Pawar (18th), Pruthiv Jaukar (20th), Navjot Singh (23rd), Jitesh Panchal (36th) and Stephan Swamy 39th); and  Metro SC rode on to the three goals from Alfaz Shaikh (14th, 21st and  32nd) to down Solapur 5-1.

In the inter-school matches, PCMC defeated Anglo Urdu School 7-0, St Ursula’s High School beat Genba Moze High School 3-2 by virtue of the tie-breaker.
