Pune: Nine days after she won Khelo India gold medal in the Under-21 Women’s Recurve archery event, Sakshi Shitole put herself in a position to get into the Indian team for the upcoming World Championship and World Cups in this all-important pre-Olympic year.

“I am confident of making it to the national squad based on the scores I have achieved so far during the ranking tournaments,” Sakshi told Sakal Times just before she boarded flight back home after the National camp ended at SAI facility in Rohtak, Haryana.

The Pune-based Sakshi was the lone woman from Maharashtra to make it to the top 16 in the women’s recurve category. Among men, Sukhmini Babrekar made it to the top 16 as No 9.

The two will be part of the selection trials to pick the Indian teams for the World Championship scheduled in Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, from June 10 to 16. The dates and venue for the trials is though yet to be announced by the Archery Association of India (AAI).

“There were 12 scoring rounds and the highest and lowest scores were dropped before arriving at our total points,” informed Sakshi.

Till last year, the AAI used to conduct two scoring rounds to pick the archers, but the selection criteria has been tightened to find the best in form markers.

Given that Olympics has only recurve archery as medal event it would be interesting to see who finally makes it count. Two-time Olympian Deepika Kumari leads the women’s rank at No1 followed by Himani, Bombayla Devi, Madhu Vidwan and Sakshi completing the top 5.

Four archers in each category, recurve and compound, in men and women will make it to the India squad for the Olympic qualifying tournaments.
