Pro Kabaddi League: Puneri Paltan wins Maharashtra Derby with classic rally
Mumbai: It was one of the best comeback so far for Puneri Paltan as the visitors defeated U Mumba 26-24 in a Maharashtra Derby which lived up to its expectations, at the Pro Kabaddi League Season 5 action, at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.
Both began tentatively and they looked evenly matched before Mumbai raiders, Kashiling Adake and Shrikanth Jadhav helped hosts U Mumba take a 6-4 lead.
A couple of successful raids helped the Mumbai boys to increase their lead further as the home crowd cheered especially for the Mumbai-bred players.
Pune tried their best to bridge the gap even as the hosts kept on collecting the points and their points tally increased.
The hosts led with ease at half time as the score read 15-9 and it seemingly looked a lost match for Puneri Paltan. With the time running out, Paltan needed to make a good comeback on the other side of the all important game.
In the second half all eyes were on Kashiling Adake, who had scored four points in the first half. The home crowd hopes were on him and were happy to see him back in form. With seven minutes to go the gap in the score was closed in as the score read 19-15 with Mumbai leading.
Pune finally came very close with five minutes to go as they bridged the gap to 21-20 thus infusing hopes for the Paltans.
The end moments of the game were truly nail-biting as Pune plotted their return in style as U Mumba lost their third match on the trot, the the second home game.
Pirates beat Thalaivas
Patna Pirates dominated the first match and beat Tamil Thalaivas 35-24. A match which saw Patna take control right from the start saw a brilliant effort put in by Monu Goyat who was impressive throughout the encounter.
In the first half, Patna Pirates began the game slowly as Tamil Thalaivas led the proceedings. But towards the end of the first half Patna upped their game as a super tackle by Jaideep saw them make a come back.
Monu Goyat showed why his team Patna Pirates can bank on him as he scored a Super -10 which kept their teams lead intact throughout the match. Goyat finished the match by emerging as the top raider attempting 16 of them and scoring 11 raid points.
Tamil Thalaivas captain Ajay Thakur tried his best to bring down the deficit but the day it seems did not belong to the Chennai outfit.
Thakur too completed his Super-10 but all his effort went in vain as the Tamil Thalaivas could not stand up to the challenge that Patna Pirates posed.
