PUNE: Maharashtra were asked to climb the mountain much bigger than in the backdrop of the MCA International Stadium and with their task cut out, the hosts are staring at an embarrassing innings defeat against Gujarat during their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match, on Tuesday.

Resuming from their overnight score of 414 for 3, the visitors were bowled out for 545, after adding another 131 runs to their total and taking a mammoth lead of 315 runs. In reply, Maharashtra are 137 for 6, still trailing by 178 runs to save the match, and skipper Ankeet Bawane yet to bat.

It has been a game to forget for Maharashtra opener Chirag Khurana, as he failed to open his account in the second innings as well. His partner, Swapnil Gugale, held one end for a while scoring 18 runs off 76 balls and was the fifth wicket to fall on 65.

In between Ruturaj Gaikwad (18), Rohit Motwani (7), and Rahul Tripathi (2) failed to put up a resistance against Gujarat attack comprising of Chintan Gaja (2/23) and Roosh Kalaria (2/33) as Maharashtra headed towards the innings defeat.

In other fixture, Vidarbha thrashed Mumbai by an innings and 145 runs in their penultimate league game to bag seven points from the game, move to the top of the points table and become the first team to seal a quarterfinal spot.

Mumbai’s first innings folded for 252 runs and were asked to follow on, as they were trailing by 259 runs. But their second innings ended with paltry 113 runs on the board. Vidarbha’s spin trio -- Aditya Sarwate (3/86 & 6/48), Akshay Wakhare (5/85 & 2/46), Akshay Karnewar (2/59 & 2/19) picked up all 20 wickets, as the defeat ends Mumbai’s chances of making it to the quarter-finals.
