Pune: Maharashtra Kesari runner-up Kiran Bhagat scored a phenomenal win over Hind Kesari Parvesh Maan and the coveted silver mace in a knockout face-off organised as part of the Shri Shambhu Mahadev Utsav in Phursungi, that concluded over the weekend.
In a contest that stretched to about half-an-hour, Bhagat took on Maan and the two fought well before Maharashtra Kesari runner-up upstaged the Haryana wrestler.
The bout was organised by Samast Gavkari Mandali at Shivshambho Stadium, the venue of several epic contests in the past. This contest has a history that goes back to 100 years in which wrestlers from Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra took part.
The winner was richer with Rs 4 lakh, while a total of Rs 26 lakh of prize money was given away.
In other weight class contest, Mauli Jamdade of Kolhapur was beaten byAjay Gujjar of Haryana in a one-sided contest. Gujjar was on the up from the start and within a few minutes from the start he knocked out Jamdade.
In a bout between Delhi’s Hitesh Kumar and Balarafiq Shaikh of Kolhapur, the Delhi wrestler won hands down. The huge gathering witnessed some close contests including the title contests for Maharashtra Champion, All-India University Champion. A total of 66 bouts were conducted.
Kautuk Daphale (Pune) beat Pravin Bhola (Delhi), Sachin Yelbhar beat Vikas Jadhav, Sagar Birajdar (Pune) beat Yogesh Bombale (Kolhapur), Akshay Shinde (Pune) beat Vijay Gutal (Kolhapur), Vilas Doiphode (Pune) beat Dnyaneshwar Gochade.
