Pune: Maharashtra athletes virtually laid seize of the biathlon events winning 17 of the 19 gold medals on offer to win the overall championship in the 8th Modern Pentathlon National Championship that concluded at the Balewadi Sports Complex here on Sunday.
There was almost no challenge to Maharashtra in the triathlon event also, with the home team winning 8 gold medals from 13 on offer, to win the triathlon championship too.
Versatile athlete Ajinkya Balwadkar struck medals in both triathlon and biathlon events in the Under-19 age class show great resolve and aptitude to compete in running, swimming and target shooting events.
The performance in the National championship will be considered to pick the Indian team for the World Biathlon and Triathlon championship scheduled in Spain next month. Given the way Maharashtra triathletes and biathletes have performed over the weekend here, the national team should figure most of the gold medalists.
In the triathlon on Day 1, Viraj Pardeshi won the gold medal in senior men’s category to start Maharashtra’s medal hunt that went on unabated. Maharashtra ended its triathlon campaign with 8 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze medals, leaving Rajasthan way behind at the second place with 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. Uttar Pradesh finished third with 2 gold and 1 bronze medal.
