Maharashtra blanks Coorg to enter quarters

First goal for Maharashtra came in third minute via penalty corner from Kavita. Two minutes later, Aishwarya doubled the lead. Maharashtra girls dominated the proceedings and scored third goal in the 19th minute with Kavita once again in action.

PUNE: Brace from Kavita Vidyarthi and one goal from Aishwarya Chavan helped Maharashtra women to crush Coorg in a Group D to enter the quarter-finals of the 8th  Hockey India Senior Women National Championship (A Division) at Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi on Monday.

Earlier, Chhattisgarh registered a comphrensive 5-1 win against Mumbai in their Pool A match. 

The winning team built on their good start with a back-to-back goals from Soni Gaund (17th, 21st) followed by Arti Kashyap (35th), Balvinderkaur Mehra (45th) and Mahima (56th). Akansha Singh (49th) scored the lone goal for Mumbai, but they were no match to Chhattisgarh who did well to overcome Sunday’s narrow 3-4 loss to Tamil Nadu. 

Then, Himachal blanked Bhopal 4-0 in a Pool B match with Vandana Rani scoring a hat-trick. Her goals came in 10th, 25th and 41st minutes. Deepika was the other goal scorer for Himachal.

RESULTS:
Pool D: Maharashtra 3 (Kavita Vidyarthi 3rd, 19th,  Aishwarya Chavan 5th) beat Coorg 0.
Pool A: Chhattisgarh 5 (Soni Gaund 17th, 21st, Arti Kashyap 35th, Balvinderkaur Mehra 45th, Mahima 56th) beat Mumbai 1 (Akansha Singh 49th).
Pool B: Himachal 4 (Vandana Rani 10th, 25th, 41st, Deepika) beat Bhopal 0.
