Pune: With the tennis season in Maharashtra reaching to its peak, the city has geared up to host $25,000 Pune Open ITF Women’s Championships at Balewadi Sports Complex, tennis courts from from November 4 to11.
Jaqueline Cristian of Romania is a top-seeded player for the event followed by Delhi based tennis player Karman Kaur Thandi who is currently India No 2 with 307 points behind the No 1 Ankita Raina (281 points).
Along with Karman, Pune’s Rutuja Bhosale has also secured a place in the main draw.
“In India three $25000 tournament take place and all of them will take place in Maharashtra which is a great achievement for the State,” said Sunder Iyer Secretary of Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association.
Players from 15 countries will be seen in action in during the tournament.
Mahek Jain, Zeel Desai, Mihika Yadav and Snehal Mane have given wild cards.
“We have given all the Wild Cards to Under-18 tennis players. It will be great chance for these players to earn valuable WTA Points, ” added Iyer.
The winner of the event will get 60 WTA points, runners-up to gain 36 points while semifinalist to get 22 points. Players participating for the first round will get 1 point while qualifying for the second round and Quarterfinals will earn players 2 and 6 point respectively.
The main draw of the tournament will start from November 6 while qualifiers will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament has received a major boost with 90 percent of prize money coming in from the MLA Fund. Kothrud MLA Medha Kulkarni has come in support of the tournament.
“Our main initiative is to promote sports and best parts of this event are it will help women players from our country to gain WTA points,” Kulkarni said.
