India face arch rivals Pakistan in opener

Pune: Two months before the Asian Games begin in Jakarta, Indian kabaddi team will get a chance to battle it out with other kabaddi teams in a six-nation Kabaddi Masters Dubai, which will commence from June 22.

India will meet Pakistan in the campaign opener in the tournament that will also feature Korea, Iran, Argentina and Kenya—making it an inter-continental contest except any country from Europe or North America.

“Kabaddi is fast becoming a renowned sport globally, and we at International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) look forward to exploring options for an international Kabaddi calendar that is active annually, successfully pinning Kabaddi across the world map,” said Janardan Singh Gehlot, the IKF President. 

“Kabaddi Masters Dubai 2018 is our first step in that direction and will elevate the stature of our sport considerably. We are thankful to the Dubai Sports Council as well as Star India for their strong role in making this happen,” he added.

The six teams are divided into two groups of three. The teams will play double legged group league, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the semi-finals.

“We are very proud that our sport has grown to this scale internationally Kabaddi Masters Dubai 2018 will give us the chance to go up against the best teams,” said Indian team coach Srinivas Reddy.

“We look forward to proving ourselves once again and will go all out to gun for the trophy,” he added.
