Navi Mumbai: Paraguay, who had already qualified for the Round of 16, maintained their perfect record as they comfortably beat Turkey 3-1 in their Group B match at the DY Patil Stadium here on Thursday.
Giovanni Bogado and Fernando Cardozo scored two in space of two minutes in the closing stages of the first-half, while Antonio Galeano added third on the hour mark as Paraguay topped the Group B with maximum 9 points. Karem Kesgin scored the consolation goal for Turkey in the stoppage time of the second half, as Turkey exited the tournament, bottom of the pile, with just one point against their name.
For the 3-1 scoreline, Turkey had to thank their goalkeeper Berke Ozer as he made numerous saves against waves of Paraguay attack. The South American nation was awarded the penalty kick in the very first minute after defender Emirhan Civelek fouled Blas Armoa who was darting down from the left wing. Anibal Vega stepped up to take the spot-kick but Ozer dived to his left to save Turkey going down at the very beginning.
Paraguay looked like the team who would score first and score plenty as their every attacking move kept Ozer on his toes, while his counterpart Diego Huesca was rarely called into action.
Turkey committed a foul outside the 18-yard-box giving Paraguay a sniff at goal and Bogada did exactly the same in the 41st minute, as he curled a sublime free-kick over the wall which kissed the cross-bar to hit the back of the net.
Paraguay doubled their lead couple of minutes later as Amora once again darted down the left flank and whipped a cross around the six-yard box, where Fernando Cardozo delicately guided the ball past the diving keeper with the back-heel flick; as Paraguay went into breather 2-0 ahead.
The second-half was a no different story but Turkey showed little more intensity in their attack, but the contest was well and truly over after they conceded third in the 61st minute.
Paraguay kept the corner kick alive and Antonio Galeano fired a shot towards goal from outside the box but took a deflection of Melih Gokcimen to leave the keeper wrong-footed as the ball found the back of the net.
Paraguay looked set to keep their first clean sheet but Kesegin fired a shot across the ground in the 93rd minute to breach the Paraguay defence.
