Guest driver Robertson takes pole position in VW Ameo Cup

Sriperumbudur: South African guest driver Devin Robertson qualified for pole position in the Round 2 of the Volkswagen Ameo Cup, a clear second better than the joint championship leaders Sandeep Kumar and Karminder Singh.

Robertson was fastest in the Free Practice sessions with the Ameo Cup race car and he carried his momentum into the Qualifying and clocked the quickest lap time of 1:54.150.

Devin, who drives in the Volkswagen Motorsport Polo Cup programme in South Africa, is a part of an exchange programme run by Volkswagen Motorsport.

Joining Devin on the first row for Saturday’s race will be Sandeep Kumar, who clocked his best lap at 1:55.252. Karminder Pal Singh and Saurav Bandyopadhyay will start race from the second row right behind Devin and Sandeep.

Karminder and Sandeep have already won a race each during the first round in Coimbatore last week and are tied for the lead in the Ameo Cup 2017 season.

“It has been a great day for our drivers, all of whom have consistently improved session after session. Devin’s lap was a stunner! With drivers like him, we are able to push our Cup contenders beyond their own limits. Also, I am really proud of our entire Motorsport team today who have built the fastest touring car of the day – the Ameo Cup race car,” said Sirish Vissa, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport India.

“The race tomorrow is going to be interesting – Devin is definitely the favourite, but the real fight will be behind him between Karminder and Sandeep,” Vissa observed.

The Ameo Cup racers came to the track for the first time in the 2017 season with a few racers driving on this circuit for the very first time.
