Dhruv clinches title in Ameo Cup

GREATER NOIDA: It was an eventful Sunday at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) which hosted the final round of the Volkswagen Ameo Cup. There was a red flag, safety car, yellow flags, it had it all as Kolhapur’s Dhruv Mohite clinched the title in the final race of the season with a second place finish in Race 2 of the day.

Although Mohite could not create a record of most number of wins in a season, a seventh-place finish in Race 1 and the second place in Race 2 were enough as he took the coveted trophy home with 458 points ahead of Saurav Bandopadhyay, who finished with 390 points. Meanwhile, Jeet  Jhabakh finished third with 376 points. Mohite’s nearest challenger Saurav Bandopadhyay came home fifth as he continues to recover from dengue.

The 20-year-old Mohite started on the first row in Race 1 but made a contact with Pole sitter Pankaj Sonawane to fall down the pecking order. Guest driver Dhruv Behl made the most of a contact between the leaders to snatch the lead, soon after, the race was red-flagged after Arefeen Raafi toppled his Ameo coming out of the last corner and took a while to come out of the car.
