Sriperumbudur: South African guest driver Devin Robertson laid bare the quality of Indian racing talent as he drove near-flawless race to win the Volkswagen Ameo Cup Race 1 ahead of championship contenders Karminder Singh and A Sandeep Kumar.
Starting at pole after setting blistering timings on Friday, Robertson quickly assumed the comfortable position and took the chequered flag untroubled through the eight laps leaving Delhi’s Karminder and Saneep from Chennai to have their own battle for the second spot.
Robertson won by over 10 seconds over Karminder, who nonetheless will get the full championship points from Race 3 of the season as Devin’s win will not be counted towards points.
After having equally split points in the Round 1 in Coimbatore, Karminer Pal Singh took a nudge ahead over Sandeep in the title hunt, at the Madras Motor Sports Race Track here.
The whole action was at the tail of Devin as Karminder launched himself early on and screeched ahead of Sandeep in the first corner. A small mistake by Sandeep cost him fraction of a second and Karminder grabbed the opportunity with open hands and capitalised on it.
Diving into the first corner, it was Karminder on the outside and slightly ahead of Sandeep. This helped the Delhi driver to close the door on Sandeep. From there on, it was no looking back for Karminder. Sandeep pushed too hard in trying to get past Karminder and made a couple of mistakes. By then Donavan Vaz, who had gained couple of positions earlier in the race, was right on Sandeep’s tail attempting to get past.
From there on Sandeep drove a defensive line maintaining his position till the finish line and not letting Donovan get ahead.
The top eight finishers of Saturday’s race will start in a reverse grid order on Sunday. “The Ameo Cup Car is great to drive. It is very different from the Polo that I drive in South Africa. The Free Practice sessions helped me in getting accustomed to the race track which helped me going in to the race,” said Robertson.
“The track is a bit bumpy and I had to adjust to its characteristics. The motor sporting culture in India is fabulous and there is a sense of comradery in the pits despite the competitive attitude on the race track.”
