Pune: Hosts BK Birla Centre of Education and Global Indian International School registered contrasting wins on the opening day of the Pune-leg of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports football tournament here on Thursday.
Egged on by 400-odd students, BK Birla romped to a 12-0 victory over SPM English Medium School to give the tournament a rousing start; later in the day, Global Indian International School (GIIS) had to ward off a spirited SNBP School in the tie breaker after being locked 3-3 at full time.
BK Birla rode on a brace each by Neeraj Patil (2nd and 9th minutes) and Anugrah Samuea (24th and 25th minutes).
In the second match, GIIS led 3-1 with goals from Deep Tambole (8th minute), Parth Chandak (27th), and Khushagra Narang (47th). But SNBP, who had restored parity within a minute of conceding their first goal through Nikhil Karanjkar, fought back in the last 10 minutes with a double strike by Ruturaj Kakde (50th & 56th).
In the ensuing tie-breaker, GIIS scored four goals while SNBP could manage just two.
The day was graced by BK Birla Principal Dr. Saibal Kumar Sanyal. The guest of the honour for the day was FC Pune City central defender Nin Dorjee. He said, “The platform created by RFYS for grassroots football is by far the most important step in terms of growing the beautiful game. If football has to grow, children need to get opportunities as early as possible.”
Dorjee was accompanied by Junior Team Coach Rakesh Walhekar and Junior goalkeeper Debojit C.
