36th Nat’l Rowing Championship at CME concludes on grand note

PUNE: The closing ceremony of 36th National Rowing Championship was held at Army Rowing Node at College of Military Engineering (CME) in Dapodi on Sunday. This year, 391 rowers from 23 teams of various states/ organisations including a team each from Army Sports Control Board & Services Sports Control Board participated in the said event.

The spectacular closing ceremony was preceded by the finals of 500-metre races of all categories. Chief Guest, Lt Gen Satish Dua, Chief of Integrated Staffs Committee, witnessed the 500-metre finals and presided over the closing ceremony. Other dignitaries, which attended the closing ceremony, included CME Commandant Lt Gen Michael Mathews, Director General Military Training Lt Gen Harpal Singh, Rowing Federation of India (RFI) President Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, former RFI president Col CP Singh Deo (retd), Secretary General Girish Phadnis and chief jury of the championship Naren Kothari.

Services team emerged as overall winners this year with a total tally of seven gold and three silver medals. Army team came second with three gold and six silver medals while Orissa team stood third with a total of three gold and two silver and two bronze medals.

In his address to declare the Championship closed, the Chief Guest said that the 36th National Rowing Championship has seen a lot of new talent emerge in this wonderful sport, which requires a very high level of physical fitness and stamina. General Dua further said that the prospects of the Indian team look very bright in the rowing events and wished the Indian team all the very best in their quest for medals in the Asian Games to be held in Indonesia in 2018.

A ‘Show Rowing’ event marked the culmination of the championship with a customary vote of thanks given by the organising committee chairman, Brig Vinay Gupta.
