Pune: City-based Indian Super League (ISL) club FC Pune City’s training facility is buzzing these days as Indian players have already arrived for the pre-season camp ahead of season 4 of the ISL starting November 17.
The foreign contingent is joining up their Indian team-mates and new head coach Ranko Popovic is expected to be here soon too as the club prepares for the new season, with their first match against the capital club, Delhi Dynamos on November 22.
After parting ways with Spaniard Antonio Habas, FC Pune City has signed up Serbian Ranko Popovic and club’s CEO Gaurav Modwel feels that they’ve got the right man at the helm.
“In Ranko, we have an experienced and aggressive on-field coach who’s known for developing young players in the side, as 9 out of 17 Indian players are Under-23,” he said.
“Ranko has coached in various parts of the world coaching Real Zaragoza in Spain, FC Machida Zelvia, FC Tokyo in Japan and in Thailand. So he is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual coach,” Modwel further said about his 50-year-old gaffer.
The season 4 of the ISL will see few changes as the season will run from mid-November to March 4, and Modwel feels that a longer league means players would show more commitment and join clubs with a long-term vision than just a stint.
Having started the trend of having pre-season on foreign soil, FC Pune City is all set to have pre-season at home at their state-of-an-art facility with fresh faces on the field as well as in the dugout.
