Pune: A second year law student has been arrested by the Cyber Cell of the city police for impersonating a girl and blackmailing over 30 men after luring them into phone sex. The accused has created a fake profile on Facebook to trap his targets.

The accused was identified as Suhit Jadhav (20), a resident of Nanded City on Sinhagad Road. Jadhav is studying law in a private college in the city.

According to details provided by the police, Jadhav used to talk to his victims on phone after befriending them on Facebook posing as a girl. He used to exchange his number with them and then engage them in sex chat by video calls. During the sex chat, he made them remove their clothes, after which he used to record their act on his phone to blackmail them later.

The Cyber Cell stated that the accused blackmailed 30 to 40 men since February. He used to extort Rs 2,000-3,000 from each of them for not posting their videos on the Internet.

Sudhir Hiremath, DCP, EOW and Cyber cell, said, “The whole thing started with a message received by Jadhav. He initially received some bogus links regarding phone sex through WhatsApp on his phone. Later, he started receiving calls on his phone for sex chats. He was irritated with such calls. One day out of frustration, he answered one of the calls and engaged the caller in conversation. He talked to the caller on video call and recorded him, after which he called him up and threatened him of posting his video on YouTube. The caller was frightened so much that he offered money to him in order to stop him from posting the video.”

Hiremath said after trapping the first victim, he started enjoying this and made a fake profile on Facebook in the name of a girl to trap more people.

“While posing as a girl on Facebook, the accused identified himself as a native of Rawalpindi in Pakistan. He posted some attractive pictures of an unknown girl to lure people in his trap. After making the Facebook profile, he received many friend requests from men, who became his victims,” added Hiremath.

When asked how he was able to talk to them without revealing his true identity on video call, Hiremath said, “We are investigating that. It seems he used to tell the callers to first engage in sex chat and then he would show his face. But during the chat, he used to record the call in their act of stripping and then used to blackmail them by threatening to post their videos on the Internet. Overall, he has extorted not less than Rs 1 lakh through blackmail.”

The police recovered three cellphones, a laptop, two debit cards and Rs 24,000 from Jadhav. He is presently in the custody of the Bund Garden police.

Jadhav has been booked under various sections of of the IPC and sections 66C, 66D of the IT Act.
