Pune: A 40-year-old woman was killed after she was beaten up by her neighbours when her cat spoiled their food on Sunday night in Suhas Padle Chawl, Mhalunge village near Hinjewadi.

According to Senior Police Inspector Arun Waykar of Hinjewadi police, the deceased has been identified as Prabha Mohan Ranpise. Four persons have been arrested in the case and have been identified as Amol Balgude (25), Ganesh Patil (24), Akash Monde (22) and Raju Salve (23). The police said Prabha stayed with her son Ajay Rishikes, daughter Sarika and son-in-law Dadu Khalse.

On Sunday night, Sarika’s pet cat had entered Raju Salve’s house and spoiled their food. Raju, who was irked, threw the cat out of the house. “Sarika and Dadu became angry over Raju’s behaviour and Dadu reached Salve’s house to question him about why he threw the cat out. This led to chaos and there was an argument between Dadu and Salve,” police said.

Following the incident, Salve and his friends reached Ranpise’s house and started assaulting Dadu, Rishikesh and Ajay. The accused were armed with bamboos. “When Prabha intervened to help Dadu and Rishikesh, she was assaulted by Amol and Ganesh. This led to Prabha’s death,” police said.

The accused were produced in the Shivajinagar court on Monday and remanded in police custody till July 7. Assistant Police Inspector NS Nemane is investigating the case. The police have seized bamboos and PVC pipes used by the accused in the crime.
