Pune: Five persons have been arrested by the Bharati Vidyapeeth police. The five had allegedly taken a ‘supari’ (contract) to kill a man in Hadapsar a week ago.
The man had eloped with and married a girl from Bhavani Peth. The contract was given by her mother who wanted to ‘set an example’ so that nobody dares to elope and marry, the police said in a statement on Monday. Both belong to different castes.
According to the police, Santosh alias Sunny Yadav (29) who stayed in Kasewadi, Bhavani Peth, had eloped with the daughter of Devai Arun Bagwe of Kasewadi. After marriage, he has been staying in Sasanenagar, Hadapsar, for the last one month. Yadav works as a cook at Shrikrishna food stall near D Mart in Sasanenagar.
Around 5.30 on June 17, he was at work when 8-9 youths, their faces covered with handkerchiefs, attacked him with sharp weapons. However, the attackers had to flee as a crowd gathered hearing the commotion. Yadav sustained severe injuries. While being admitted in Ruby Hall Clinic, he gave a statement to the police and an FIR was registered against unidentified persons.
On Sunday, while patrolling in Bharati Vidyapeeth police station policeman Amol Pawar from detection branch received information that five youths who had attacked a man in Hadapsar few days ago, are standing near the Katraj Talav (pond). Accordingly, a team reached there and nabbed them.
Police officials said that during interrogation, they learnt about the contract to kill Yadav.
