Woman ends life to oppose PCMC's demolition drive

Pimpri: In a bid to oppose the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) demolition drive against illegally constructed houses, a 30-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping off from the fourth floor of a building in Pimple Gurav, on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Devkar Park in Pimple Gurav. The woman was identified as Devibai Ram Pawar (30), a resident of Devkar Park.

The PCMC's anti-encroachment department has been taking action against illegal constructions in Pimple Gurav for the past few days. An anti-encroachment squad was preparing to demolish a few illegal buildings in Devkar Park around 11 am on Tuesday.

Devibai jumped off from the fourth floor of the building as officials were inspecting it. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead during treatment. After the incident, civic officials stopped the demolition immediately.

Angry local residents stoned the PCMC's demolition machinery.

Tension prevailed in the area for the rest of the day.

The officials said the action in the area has been suspended for the time being.

The BJP city unit organised a press conference to clarify its stand against allegations of corruption. However, the press conference was cancelled after paying tribute to the victim. A few days ago, a person had tried to immolate himself by pouring kerosene on his body at Morya Park in Pimple Gurav. However, the police averted an untoward incident.
