Pune: Officials of the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) have been successful in increasing the water storage of Mastani lake in Haveli taluka by 25 per cent, following the extensive desilting work. Officials of the PMRDA said that the storage capacity of the lake will increase, which will help in providing water to nearby areas.

The lake is situated near Dive Ghat on Pune-Saswad Road and was built in 1720 AD.

PMRDA started excavation work here in April this year after Guardian Minister Girish Bapat sanctioned Rs 3 crore for the initiative, under the de-silting of reservoirs scheme of the State government.

PMRDA Chief Kiran Gitte said the lake is spread over 4 acres of land and over 26,600 cubic metres of silt was removed from the lake, which has increased the storage capacity of the lake.

“Over 70 wells that had dried up in the vicinity are now getting enough water supply. The increase in storage capacity will help PMRDA in providing water to farmers. Similarly, the excavated silt has been provided to nearby farmers,” added Gitte.

PMRDA is carrying the de-silting part in different parts of the district to increase the water storage which will help to meet the rising demands of water by locals in the area.
