Water cut likely to be imposed in PCMC

PIMPRI: The water supply department of PCMC is considering imposing water cut as due to severe heat, the water level in Pavana dam has drastically reduced by 4 per cent in last 10 days. On Monday, there was 39.92 per cent water stock in the dam. The water stock should last till June 30.

Due to availability of water, last month, Mayor Nitin Kalaje had announced that there will be no water cut. But officials are of the view that the civic body must consider the water cut in advance so that it should not have to face severe water crisis in the future.

The Water Supply Department draws 400 to 450 MLD of water from the river. Last year, on the same day, there was 39 % water. The water supply was meant till June end. In the last ten days, the water level in the dam has fallen by four per cent.

On March 31, there was 48 per cent water stock in the dam. In the last 22 days, water storage has declined by 10 per cent. The water storage must last till the monsoon showers but monsoon is expected after 50 days.

The Irrigation Department provides 4.84 TMC of water to the city throughout the year. Due to rising population, the demand for water has increased by more than 0.5 TMC, which is about 10 per cent of the water of the allocated water for the city.
