Wakad police seize red sandalwood worth Rs 16 cr bound for Mumbai

“The smugglers had hidden the sandalwood with empty glass bottles in the container truck,” said Senior Police Inspector Satish Mane of Wakad police station.

PUNE: Officials from Wakad police station, on Thursday, busted a red sandalwood smuggling racket and seized sandalwood worth Rs 16 crore, which was being taken to Mumbai. The total seized sandalwood is 16 tonnes and 200 kg. The ringleader who was escorting the truck in a car fled from the spot.

Acting on a tip-off received by PSI Harish Mane, a trap was laid on the highway near Tathawade and the truck was stopped. “The smugglers had hidden the sandalwood with empty glass bottles in the container truck,” said Senior Police Inspector Satish Mane of Wakad police station.

Police have registered a case against the container owner Adil Mehmood Khan (30) of Govandi and driver R Ariwargan (28) of Chennai.

According to police, the accused persons did not have proper documents and they were illegally transporting the sandalwood.
