Wakad cops nab 2 dacoits, recover ornaments worth around Rs 23 lakh

Pune: About one-and-half months after dacoits looted gold ornaments worth Rs 90 lakh from Punekar Jewellers in Rahatani, officials from Wakad police station under Pimpri-Chinchwad police nabbed two of them and recovered ornaments worth Rs 23 lakh. 

The police also seized two pistols from the arrested accused identified as Subhash Mohanlal Bishnoi (24), resident of  Hissar, Haryana, and Mahipal Dudharam Jat of Rajasthan. Their five associates are absconding and the police are searching for them.

Addressing a press conference, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner RK Padmanabhan said, “The accused persons had done recce of the shop and area on February 22. They looted three kg gold ornaments on the afternoon of March 6. Our team scanned over 300 footages of CCTV cameras on the route used by the accused persons. On March 13, our team reached up to Wagholi, where a shopkeeper identified one of the accused. The accused had left home in the area on March 6 itself.”

A team led by Police Sub-Inspector Harish Mane of Wakad police station camped in Haryana for a month. They took the two accused into custody and recovered ornaments worth Rs23 lakh and two pistols from them. 

Motive behind dacoity
The police said the mastermind Anil alias Chhotu, who is absconding, is highly educated. He is preparing for the UPSC exam. Earlier, he had an opportunity to go to Australia but came back from the airport, after his friend told him to take revenge on a rival gang for assaulting him.
