Pimpri: Residents of Wagholi on Nagar Road, a newly urbanised area, desperately want the merger of Wagholi either in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) or Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits.
Fed up with the Wagholi gram panchayat’s inability to handle the civic issues pertaining to the area, the residents have launched an online petition appealing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to expedite merger procedure of the village in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Harcharanjit Butalia has launched this online petition a month ago. So far, 2,366 people have signed this petition.
Butalia said, “The State government has issued merger notification of 34 villages into PMC in 2014. But, no action has been taken regarding this. Due to failure of Wagholi gram panchayat to provide civic amenities to the residents, we want the merger of the area into PMC as early as possible. However, we are still clueless about the fate of this merger plan. So we started this online petition.”
According to Butalia, due to proximity to Kharadi IT park, Wagholi has become a new destination for investment in real estate sector. Many professionals working in Kharadi IT park have bought flats in residential projects in Wagholi. The population of Wagholi village has increased significantly as large scale residential projects have come up in the area in a short span of time. But, Wagholi gram panchayat could not manage the needs of increased population.”
Waste management, water supply and sewer lines are in pathetic state in the area. Waste is being burnt in open, which is causing air pollution in the area.
Butalia said, “We have approached various political leaders regarding this. They are saying the merger of Wagholi into PMC is on the cards. But, no one has given a timeline for the same. If PMC could not expedite the merger procedure in time, then we have no problem with merger into PCMC.”
