Pune: Pune-based urologist Dr Suresh Patankar holds two European patents in his name, one for a herbal composition on wound healing, specially after surgeries, and the second for treatment of small kidney stones and preventing their recurrence.

“Of the 37,080 worldwide patents, 3,099 are issued to individuals applicants. About 70-80 per cent of these are patents on Chinese traditional medicines. This clearly suggests that our country is lagging behind in scientifically validated research on traditional medicines even though it has immense treasure of traditional knowledge that is yet unexplored,” said Patankar.

He added that research in traditional science with scientific validation and modern methods can fill gaps that exist in modern medicine. “Alternative medicine still lacks enough documentation and research through modern scientific methods. Therefore, people have not yet recognised its benefits fully. These patents will give a definitive direction to research in these streams,” said Patankar.

He added that both treatments have been practised on more than 2,000 patients. He spoke about making these medicines commercially so that people at large can benefit. “The subjects for which I got patents help reduce post surgical wound problems and reduce the gap in treatment for kidney stones at the primary stage post endoscopy, thereby reducing risk of tissue damage,” said Patankar.
