Pune: The alertness of a railway patrolman prevented a major tragedy on Tuesday morning. Sunil Kumar Bihari found out that there was a fractured railway track between Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill stations when the Mumbai CSMT-Pune Intercity Express was passing.
The incident took place around 8.35 am. He alerted the authorities and stopped the train immediately and a disaster was prevented.
Train number 12127 Mumbai CSMT-Pune Intercity Express departed CSMT at 6.40 am and was supposed to arrive at 9.57 am but got delayed by 1.15 hour. Thousands of passengers use this train every day to travel from Mumbai to Pune.
A railway official said, “There was a gap between the railway track and sleeper, which was discovered by a patrolman. Sunil was on duty and his work is to patrol between Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill. He found that there was a gap and he immediately informed the signal department. However, while moving through the ghat section, the train was driven at a slow pace for safety measures. The engine and two coaches had already passed through the broken track, after that the train was stopped.”
According to railway officials, only two trains, 12127 Intercity Express and 11007 Deccan Express, were delayed due to the repair work.
Anil Jain, Senior Public Relations Officer from Central Railway, said, “A gap was found between Monkey Hill and Thakurwadi station. The patrolman, whose duty to look after the track, saw the gap and alert the department. The train was stopped till the repairing of the track, which delayed the train. The middle line was open and no other trains was delayed.”
