Traffic police on their toes to nab offenders

A training session was organised by the city police traffic division on use of breath analysers for policemen who have recently joined the traffic police department. Speaking about drink and driving cases in Pune, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ashok Morale said that people should refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.

Pune: Around 800 traffic police personnel will be deployed to regulate traffic and nabbing people driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year’s Eve. Traffic police officials will be armed with 145 breath analysers to check for people driving under the influence of alcohol.

This year, the traffic police have caught over 1,700 people for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Speaking about drink and driving cases in Pune, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ashok Morale said that people should refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.

“It is a known fact that alcohol hampers your driving ability and can lead to accidents. All traffic policemen will be on their toes to regulate traffic and people should not support driving under the influence of alcohol. This year, we have created 56 patrolling points, two in each traffic division and will focus on nabbing people violating traffic rules,” added Morale.

The traffic police said that offenders of the rule will face problems and their licences will be seized which the offenders have to collect after court procedures. The traffic police said that this year, the maximum offenders were nabbed under the jurisdiction of Hinjawadi, Bharti Vidyapeeth and Hadapsar traffic police division. 

What is a breath analyser? 
 A device for estimating blood alcohol content (BAC) from a breath sample. The report of BAC is printed by the device. 
What is the limit? 
 Permissible blood-alcohol content is 30 mg per 100 ml.
 What Act says? 
 Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act states driving by a drunk person or by a person under the influence of drugs is a punishable offence.
