PUNE: Traffic chaos reigned in the city on Saturday in view of the Palkhi processions. Despite making arrangements including barricading of roads, traffic diversions and heavy police bandobast, traffic disorder was clearly visible in the evening in Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner, Kothrud, Navi Peth, Jangli Maharaj Road, Yerawada and Camp, besides other residential areas.

According to the police, the whole traffic division and an additional force of around 10,000 police personnel were deployed during the procession. Around 5 lakh devotees took part in the procession.

It is significant to note that DCP (Traffic) Ashok Morale was not in the city on Saturday as he was sent to Nagpur on official duty for the ongoing monsoon session of the State Assembly.

Commuters said police officials failed to manage traffic and there was chaos in various areas, including on highways. People were openly violating traffic rules and driving recklessly. A commuter said, “Police didn’t pay any attention to traffic violators because of which more congestion occurred on roads.”
