PUNE: Instead of going to crowded tourist destinations, a group of environment-friendly youths working in IT companies in the city have come together and formed a group called ‘GreenITians’ to utilise their weekends for a good cause. They are conducting tree plantation drive in and around the city during the weekends.
One of the members, Sudhir Sancheti had started plantation in his flat. He grew mango and jambul saplings and then planted it in the outdoors. Sancheti told Sakal Times, “I believe alone we can do so little, together we can do a lot, that’s how the group was formed. We have opened a page on a popular social media platform so that many people could join the initiative.”
The idea was percolated to contacts and within a fortnight, many members including Nirajan Adhav, Krushank Patel, Sandip Dutta, Nikhil Shinde, Kunal Ingole, Vijay Kapse and Amit Ukey joined their hands discussing on social media on how to take it ahead.
Niranjan Adhav said, “Every member of the group participated actively and helped in locating nearby places feasible for plantation. Hanuman Tekdi behind FC College was finalised, where we used to play cricket every Saturday morning. It was selected as after monsoon, everyone will continue to play cricket and will be visiting plants at least once a week.”
On Saturday, June 24, the group planted 15 saplings, 5 big around 7/8 feet height and 10 small ones with friends and family members, under the supervision of Vijay Kadapure, a well-known person in the agriculture field. Post the first drive, group members started getting inquiries from friends and family to extend their hands in the cause. The second drive was finalised in Undri on Saturday, July 1.
Sancheti said, “Till this time, there was no name decided for the group. Everyone was equally enthusiastic in suggesting names. The name finalised was ‘GreenITians’ as each one was linked to the IT sector and it was unique as well. Hence, GreenITians won the name race, but we had also given consolidation prices to other by naming each drive with it.”
Sancheti said, “As GreenITians, we believe in teamwork, waking up early and working few hours over weekends for a social cause is our motto. We believe in AnyBodyCanPlant but seems there’s more need for IT people to wake up and spend their weekly off for a social cause. We are planning to take up some other social cause through this group,” Sancheti said.
