Teachers to strike over new pension scheme

PUNE: Primary teachers across the State, who are part of the Maharashtra State Primary Teachers Council, will be participating in the protest march organised by Maharashtra State Old Pension Right Association. The pension dindi (march for pension protest) has demanded the pension scheme to be applicable to the newly recruited teachers too.

The march will take place on October 2 in Mumbai. The Maharashtra State Primary Teachers Council, Pune district, has also extended its full support to the march.

“All the government employees are entitled to the pension scheme. However, for those recruited after 2005, the Central Government had brought in a new scheme. Under this scheme, a certain amount was cut from the salaries of the teachers to avail the pension scheme. This led to losses for the teachers. Despite protests and demands, the government did not budge. Hence, the protesting teachers formed the Maharashtra State Old Pension Right Association,” Santosh Upadhye, City President, Maharashtra State Primary Teachers Council, said.
