Pune: Rajya Sabha Member and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy lashed out at the Congress for critising Goods and Service Tax (GST) and questioned why the party approved passing of the bill if they were against it.
Swamy was speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the ‘Devarshi Narad Journalism Awards’ distribution ceremony held at Fergusson College on Monday.
The awards are given jointly by the Vishwa Samwad Kendra, RSS media arm (Paschim Maharashtra Prant), and Deccan Education Society, which runs Fergusson College, to senior and young journalists, photographers and cartoonists working in mainstream and social media. Swamy felicited Bhau Torsekar, Parag Potdar, Rajendra Sarag and Devidas Deshpande for their contribution in journalism.
Former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram has been criticising GST. Swami called Chidambaram a ‘liar’ and said that when Chidambaram was finance minister, he introduced GST in Parliament. “According to him, if this is not GST, why then did they vote for it?”
‘Only those with degrees should be journalists’
Swami stressed that there is a need for professional journalism courses on the lines of IITs and IIMs. “Rules should be formulated in a such a way that journalism should emerge as a profession and only those who have a degree in journalism should be allowed to enter into journalism,” he said.
