SWaCH celebrates World Environment Day in city

Pune: On the occasion of World Environment Day, SWaCH has organised a week-long event from June 3 to June 10 across the city so that the citizens can connect with the environment better.

The eight-day event includes adventure trail, fashion show, poetry and many more. Lend recycling a hand with SWaCH collection drive was held on June 3, the brand audit data was released on June 4. With the aim to reach out to more people, on June 5 an event by BhaDiPa, stand-up comedy for live entertainment and also sharing knowledge about waste management was organised.

Material recovery facility was inaugurated for better recycling spaces on June 6. A fashion show has been organised by Jagannath Rathi Vocational Guidance & Training Institute, Pune, with the use of old used clothes, on June 7. Dedicated towards poetry, poets and performances on waste will be held on June 8 and ‘describe the journey of waste trails’ will be initiated on June 9. And on the last day, June 10, the ‘don’t pollute route fun activities and meet-ups’ will be held to share more knowledge on waste management.

Aparna Susarla, Manager of SwaCH, said, “The informal recycling sector is already recycling a majority of the waste generated in the city. We implore State government and corporates to upgrade and integrate this sector in EPR strategies instead of creating parallel systems, which will ensure maximum recovery of materials through existing recycling chains and preservation of waste pickers and scrap traders’ livelihoods.”
