We all are used to celebrating Diwali at home with our family. However, these patients are homeless and they do not have families. So the initiative was decided where we all spent some quality time with these patients,” said Shete. He said these patients are in need of care and affection. “The idea was to make them feel at home. We presented around 200 patients with fruits like bananas and apples and extended our best wishes to them for Diwali

Pune: Members of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctor (MARD) from Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) and BJ General Medical College (BJGMC) celebrated Diwali with homeless patients by distributing fruits.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Datta Shete, MARD President from BJGMC said the doctors took the initiative as Diwali approached.

“We all are used to celebrating Diwali at home with our family. However, these patients are homeless and they do not have families. So the initiative was decided where we all spent some quality time with these patients,” said Shete. He said these patients are in need of care and affection. “The idea was to make them feel at home. We presented around 200 patients with fruits like bananas and apples and extended our best wishes to them for Diwali."

He said this step was also to promote more interaction and friendly atmosphere in the hospital.

“The doctors go through a lot of stress and sometimes they face violent interactions with patients. Such gestures are intended to show our friendly side. This also helps in breaking the ice between patients and doctors,” said Dr Shete.
