Pune: In an alleged incident of negligence on part of school authorities, Suraj Paswan of JSPM Prodigy Public School, Wagholi, was hit by a moving car on December 17 while running the JSPM Runathon 2017.
Paswan, who was participating in the 10-km event, was rushed to Jupiter Hospital, Baner, where he remains admitted with multiple fractures.
Organised by the JSPM Group of Schools, Pune the Runathon comprised 3 km, 5 km and 10 km runs. The event, which was open for all, had 745 participants as per school authorities. The 10-km run was flagged off at 6 am from Balewadi Stadium.
Narrating the events, Suraj said, "We assembled at the school by 4 am and were taken to Balewadi stadium by 5 am. The run was flagged off at 6 am from the road outside Balewadi stadium. I ran for about 4-5 km. I don't remember what happened thereafter. When I gained consciousness I found myself in this hospital."
Suraj’s mother, Rajni Paswan, said, "We were made to understand that the run would take place inside the stadium. But it was organised on the road. There were no blocks set up enroute for road safety."
A co-student, who participated in the run, affirmed that traffic along the route was not regulated.
As per an advertisement for the event hosted on the website www.eventshigh.com, the route for the run was Balewadi stadium-Kapil Malhar Society-NIO Eye Hospital-Balewadi Phata-High Street-MC Donald-Balewadi stadium.
When the car’s driver, who hit Suraj was contacted, he said there was no traffic control on the road to caution vehicle drivers about the running children. Paswan was rushed to the hospital by the car's driver, while Suraj's parents were informed about the mishap by a student.
Payal Mudliyar, Principal of JSPM Prodigy Public School, when contacted, said she had no information about the accident as she is currently not in Pune. Assistant Director of the school, Amita Kamat, when asked about this incident, said, "I'll get back to you." Till the time of going to press, no communication was received from her.
