The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) hired agency could sterilise only 30 to 35 stray dogs per day.

Pimpri: On an average 1,000 dog bite cases are reported in Pimpri Chinchwad per month. The number of stray dogs is increasing on city roads. The efforts for controlling this menace are not adequate. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) hired agency could sterilise only 30 to 35 stray dogs per day.

If the civic body fails to control this menace, it will cost heavily the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

To control the stray dog menace, the ruling party leaders ordered fresh census of stray dogs in August 2017. But the finding of the survey has not been made public. It has not reduced stray dog menace on roads.

NCP city unit Vice President Amit Bacchhav alleged the civic body has failed to control the stray dog menace. He wrote to the Municipal Commissioner on the issue. He said the stray dog issue has become serious. But the civic body has failed to take concrete measures to solve this issue. Current mechanism for catching and sterilising stray dogs is not enough considering increasing number of stray dogs in the city.

He said, “We are witnessing dog bite cases every day.  Most of the time children and senior citizens fall prey to these stray dogs. So there is urgent need for measures for controlling stray menace in the city.”
