Do 100 pc segregation of garbage to get devp grant, State tells civic bodies

Pune: The State government has declared ‘Swachh August Kranti’ month for the segregation of garbage in all municipal corporations, which will be monitored by the State government on a day-to-day basis. This will be considered a vital parameter while deciding the performance of corporations. The civic bodies performing well on this account will be given special grants for road development on the performance of corporations.

On August 1, State government’s Urban Development Department had issued an order to start Swachh August Kranti month from August 1 to 31. It is basically focused on segregation of garbage. Government had mentioned in the order that due to lack of segregation (wet and dry) garbage, it is very difficult to process the garbage and get better value for it in the market. Some cities have done a good job on the segregation of garbage, collection and transportation and processing of garbage. Due to this, the Maharashtra State government got a good position at the national-level Swachh Survekshan-2018. On the other hand, some cities failed to improve their performance and got lesser ranks in the state level as well as national level Swachh Survekshan-2018.

While speaking to Sakal Times, Suresh Jagtap, head of Solid Waste Management Department of the corporation, said, “The State is giving very little grants to the corporation. However, the State has announced Swachh August Kranti month. We have started to increase segregation of waste. Right now, we are segregating 65 per cent waste. Now, we will identify spots where less segregation occurs and increase it.

“We will reach up to 80 per cent of the target.”

The order has mentioned that there is no other alternative but to make 100 per cent segregation of garbage. Therefore, it is necessary to create awareness among the people and follow discipline. Hence, government has announced “Swachh August Kranti” mission across the State in all local self bodies.

Government will be holding chiefs of local self bodies responsible and their performances will be linked for releasing grants for road development and special purpose. They have said in the order that they will take decisions based on their performances.

Under the Swachh August Kranti mission, officials should have to submit garbage segregation report to the district administration officer. District officer should have to collect daily reports from all local bodies and visit local bodies once in a week to check their work.

Government has given directives to follow a system to sort out garbage problem with door-to-door garbage and transportation, segregation at source and processing of garbage scientifically. All local bodies should have 80 per cent garbage segregated at source, 100 per cent garbage door to door collection and transportation and 100 per cent processing done scientifically.
